L.O. To use colons and semi-colons


Homework book, blue pen and green pen.


Read these instructions then watch the video, the teacher will explain to when to pause.

Complete all work in your Homework book under your Date and LO not on a sheet of paper.


Click ‘Start Lesson’ then ‘Start Quiz’. First, complete the quiz. This is to show what you already know so don’t worry if you find some questions tricky. Record your score in your Homework book.

Then, scroll up to the top of the page then click ‘Next Activity’.


Word of the day (inept) – Pause the video once the word of the day is introduced. Write the word and meaning into your book then use the word in two different sentences and find synonyms and antonyms.


Spellings- Note down the spellings, (also available on the school website) and learn them using Look, Cover, Write and Check. Ensure you know the meaning of each word and try to use them in your writing or in a sentence. You will send your score on Friday, after the test, to your teacher via I am Learning.


Continue the video, pausing when needed to answer Mr Fozzard’s questions.

INDEPENDENT TASK- Listen to the explanation and then pause the video. Scroll up to the top of the page and click ‘Next Activity’ click through the slides until you see the independent task (should be larger than on the video).


Task 1 – identify the correct use of colons to introduce a list.

Task 2 – Insert a colon into the sentences in the correct place.

Task 3 - Insert a semi-colon into the sentences in the correct place.

Task 4 – Think about your main character you will be describing in the final session. Write 5 sentences which include either a colon or semi-colon to separate independent clauses that you could use.

Further challenge: Scan and skim through the book you are currently reading to find a character description, colons and semi-colons. Magpie some good phrases ready for your writing tomorrow.


Once you have completed the tasks, resume the video to mark your work. Task 4 sentences can be shared with an adult to check they are correct.


Once the video is finished please close it. Then, click ‘Next Activity’. You should see ‘Start Quiz’ complete the quiz. Record your score in your Homework book (out of 8) then send your English and Math score to your class teacher when you send your ‘Good Morning’ message on I Am Learning on Friday
