LO: To learn how to indicate parenthesis.

Parenthesis: Parenthesis is a word or phrase that is usually demarcated by brackets, commas or dashes to provide extra information. If the parenthesis is taken away, the sentence would still be complete and make sense without it.

Resources (including
exercise book being used)

English book, blue pen, pencil, ruler and green pen.

Click ‘Start Lesson’ then ‘Start Quiz’. First, complete the quiz. This is to show what you already know so don’t worry if you find some questions tricky. Record your score in your English book.

Then, scroll up to the top of the page then click ‘Next Activity’.

Read these instructions then watch the video, the teacher will explain when to pause. Complete all work in your English book under your Date and LO, not on a sheet of paper. You can reply to the teacher out loud just like a real lesson! When it says ‘Your turn’ please copy the short paragraph into your English book and underline using a ruler where there is parenthesis. Then mark in green pen when the teacher tells you the answer.

Word of the day – Pause the video once the word of the day is introduced. Write the word and meaning into your book then use the word in two different sentences and find synonyms and antonyms (as we have done in school).

INDEPENDENT TASK- Listen to the explanation and then pause the video and close the video. Scroll up to the top of the page and click ‘Next Activity’. Click through the slides until you see the independent task (should be larger than on the video). Complete the task in your English book. The task asks you to write 3 sentences but I think we can challenge ourselves and write a little more. Please write at least 5 sentences using brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis.

Then, resume the video by scrolling up to the top of the page and selecting resume and mark your work in green pen. As you have all written your own sentences using parenthesis, you will need to self-assess by looking back at the slides to check that you have used this correctly. You may also want to ask an adult at home to check through your work.

Spellings- This is additional spelling work to your normal spelling test which will still be on a Friday.

Again, click ‘Next Activity’. You should see ‘Start Quiz’ complete the quiz. Record your score in your English book then send your English and Maths score to your class teacher when you send your ‘Good Morning’ message on I Am Learning tomorrow. You may also want to share your fantastic sentences with your teacher!

Please make sure you practise the spellings that you have learnt this week on Oak National Academy as you will be tested in tomorrow’s lesson. Remember, this is separate to the spelling test that you normally have on Friday.

Further challenge

Complete the task on ‘Parenthesis and commas A’.
