L.O. to find the area of triangles

Resources (including
exercise book being used)

Maths book, pencil, green pen and ruler.


Write your date and LO in your Maths book, then complete the Introductory quiz. This is to show what you already know so don’t worry if you find some questions tricky. Record your score in your Maths book.

Then, scroll up to the top of the page then click ‘Next Activity’.


As you go through the video pause at the appropriate times and complete the tasks set your teacher.


1m 05s Warm up. Recap your knowledge of finding the area of triangle – count the squares to find the measurements. 


3m 05s Area of Triangles. Draw two congruent triangles (like the ones in the video) and find how many different shapes they can make. Measurements can be 5cm x 7cm.


Cutting up a rectangle – Make notes on how cutting up different rectangles can help find the area of triangles. Optional tasks is you can cut up your own along with the video.


11m 10s Rectangle and triangle connections. – copy the diagram, annotate and make notes.


11m 44s Same/Different. Copy each diagram into your books then write what is the same and different including the possible area and perimenter of each triangle.


14m 28s Equal area. Experiment with moving P to make the area the same, bigger and samller. You may need to draw multiple triangles in you books – ensure you label them. When you resume the video mark your work but also make notes/copy the teacher’s examples.  


16m 40s Develop learning. Copy the diagram into your books (with labels including the dashes) and explain who is right, Ambrita or Bella, by showing your working out.


18m 09s Different methods. Copy the diagram inot books and write out all the methods. Tick the correct methods and explain why the others will not work.


18m 50s Area of a triangle check. Work out the area of the triangle and select the xorrect answer.


22m 30s Explore. Draw triangle to satisfy the 3 childrens statements. Read the criteria carefully.

  1. Draw 1 triangle for each students’ statements that does not satifisy (make true) any other students’ statements.
  2. Draw 1 triangle to satisfy 2 students’ statements but not all three.
  3. Draw 1 triangle to satisfy all 3 statements.

INDEPENDENT TASK – Once the video is finished exit off and click ‘next activity’. Answer Questions 1-4 then mark your work.


Then, click ‘Next Activity’ to view ‘Start Quiz’. Complete the ‘Exit quiz’ and record your score (out of 4).
