Year 5 to Year 6 Homework

Dear Year Five (soon to be Year Six!),

All of the Year Six staff are really looking forward to meeting you in September. We know that you will have lots of questions about Year Six that might not have been answered. If you write these down so you don’t forget them, your teacher will discuss them in September. We are sure you are also looking forward to seeing the children in your year group and catching up with them.

In English, we will be reading Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo (also the author of Kensuke’s Kingdom). This is a deeply moving novel about a private, Tommo, fighting in World War One. From the battlefields he relives memories of his childhood with his brother Charlie and life in the countryside. Can a bond and loyalty between brothers overcome the brutality of the front lines and bring them safely home? Michael Morpurgo has also written lots of other novels which you may have already read or want to read ready for next year.

Your Year Five teachers have also set optional Summer Learning which you can complete if there are topics you would like to review during the break.

We would like you to complete the homework below to help you get ready for September.

Year 5 to Year 6 Homework

Please continue to read over summer! Check the Year Five Summer Learning page to find information on how to access eBooks and to see a suggested reading list. In Year Six, your teacher will expect you to be able to read independently for at least 15-20 minutes so you may wish to practise this over summer. It is also important that you still continue to practise reading aloud using expression.
Your main English task is to find out and learn the meaning of the words on the document saved below (Private Peaceful Vocabulary) so that you understand them when we encounter them in our novel.

Use the Year Five Summer Learning page and the previous distance learning work to review any topics you feel unsure about. It is important that you are confident with your times tables and number bonds as these will help you calculate mentally.

In Year Six, we will be learning more about Electricity. To prepare for this, we would like to you to learn the symbols that represent different parts of a circuit. The BBC Bitesize website is a helpful starting point.

Most importantly, make sure you have a rest and take time to relax and hopefully enjoy the sun!

We can’t wait to see you all again!

Miss Ragdale, Miss Bean and Miss Miller
